About title case rules
Common style guides keep short articles, conjunctions and prepositions lowercase unless they start the title. This tool follows that general convention.
The title-case rules used here
The converter applies a compact general-purpose rule set rather than claiming to reproduce every publishing style guide.
Method
Each whitespace-separated token is lowercased, then its first character is capitalized unless it is a listed short word after the first token.
Short-word list
The lowercase list includes common articles, conjunctions, and prepositions such as a, an, and, as, at, by, for, in, of, on, or, the, to, via, and vs.
Limits
- The converter does not implement a named style such as AP, APA, Chicago, or MLA.
- Punctuation attached to a short word can affect whether it matches the lowercase list.
- Review acronyms, brand names, hyphenated compounds, names, and words after a colon.
