Build a whole-block grid from a target quilt size

Enter the desired finished width and height, a square finished block size and seam allowance for each edge. The calculator rounds the grid up to whole blocks, reports blocks across and down, and adds both seam edges to show the cut size for a simple square block. It also reveals how much the whole-block layout exceeds the target dimensions.

Account for the complete quilt design

Borders, sashing, setting triangles, block trimming, directional motifs, shrinkage and quilting take-up are outside this grid. Confirm whether the entered block size is finished or unfinished and follow the pattern construction order before cutting all pieces.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the grid sometimes exceed my target?

Counts round up to whole blocks so the top is not smaller than the target.

Is the cut size the same as finished size?

No. The calculator adds seam allowance to both edges.

Are borders and sashing included?

No. The result is a plain square-block grid.
