Calculate a markup

Markup is the amount added to the cost of an item to set its selling price, expressed as a percentage of the cost. Enter the cost and the markup percentage to get the selling price and the profit per unit. Retailers and makers use markup to price goods so that each sale covers costs and leaves a profit.

Markup is not margin

Markup is measured against cost, while margin is measured against the selling price, so the same dollar profit gives a higher markup percentage than margin percentage.

Frequently asked questions

How is markup calculated?

Multiply the cost by the markup percentage to get the profit, then add it to the cost. A 50 dollar item with 40 percent markup sells for 70 dollars.

What is the difference between markup and margin?

Markup is the profit as a percentage of cost; margin is the profit as a percentage of the selling price. Markup is always the larger number.
