Kilobytes to megabytes

Drop a kilobyte amount into either field and the megabyte equivalent appears at once. Since 1,024 kilobytes fit inside a megabyte, you divide by 1,024 to make the jump. This comes up with email attachments, image files and documents that are listed in kilobytes when you want the bigger-picture megabyte figure. Everything is worked out locally in the page.

Handy figures

1,024 KB is 1 MB, 2,048 KB is 2 MB, and a 500 KB photo is roughly half a megabyte.

Method and checks

This converter uses a 1,024-based scale

The tool divides kilobytes by 1,024 to produce megabytes, following a common binary file-size convention.

Method

Divide the entered KB value by 1,024. The reverse conversion multiplies MB by 1,024.

MB = KB / 1,024

Worked example

2,560 KB divided by 1,024 equals 2.5 MB in this converter.

Unit convention

  • SI prefixes use 1,000 bytes per kilobyte and 1,000 kilobytes per megabyte.
  • IEC names for the 1,024-based units are kibibyte (KiB) and mebibyte (MiB).
  • File managers and services do not all label these conventions consistently, so totals can differ.

Frequently asked questions

How many KB are in an MB?

A megabyte contains 1,024 kilobytes in the binary system. Product marketing sometimes counts in even thousands.

My file says 700 KB — how big is that?

About 0.68 MB, since you divide 700 by 1,024 to reach megabytes.
