Hiking Time & Elevation Calculator
Estimate hiking time from trail distance, total ascent, travel rates and planned breaks.
What would you like to do next?
Combine trail distance and ascent in one time estimate
Enter a mapped distance, total ascent, a realistic flat-ground speed, a vertical climbing rate and planned break minutes. The calculator converts miles and feet when needed, finds separate horizontal and climbing allowances, then adds them into moving time and an overall trip estimate. The output also shows an average pace for the selected distance unit.
Use rates that match the actual group and route
The formula makes each assumption visible but cannot read the trail. Technical footing, long descents, route finding, weather, altitude, daylight, water stops and the slowest group member can change the result substantially. Check current trail information and leave an appropriate margin before committing to a turnaround time.
Frequently asked questions
How is ascent included?
Vertical gain is divided by the climbing rate entered and added to horizontal travel time.
Can I use miles and feet?
Yes. Select the Imperial measurement option.
Does the estimate include descent difficulty?
No. Add margin when descent, footing or route conditions will slow the group.
