A negative height produces an energy decrease, making the direction of the change explicit instead of returning only an unsigned number.

Choose a reference height and valid gravity range

Potential energy depends on a chosen zero height, while only differences affect this calculation. Constant gravity is a useful near-surface approximation but becomes less accurate across very large altitude changes. The tool does not model drag, efficiency or the path taken. Lifting systems and safety work require forces, dynamics and equipment limits beyond the energy baseline.
