Raise a number to a power
An exponent tells you how many times to multiply a base by itself, so 2 raised to the power of 10 means ten 2s multiplied together. Enter a base and an exponent and this tool returns the result, handling positive, negative and fractional powers. A negative exponent gives a reciprocal, and a fractional exponent acts like a root, so a power of one half is the same as a square root. The answer recalculates as you change either field.
Reading negative and fractional powers
A power of minus one gives one over the base, while a power of one third returns the cube root, so the same tool covers roots as well as powers.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use negative or decimal exponents?
Yes. A negative exponent produces a reciprocal, and a fractional exponent behaves like a root of the base.
What does an exponent of zero give?
Any non-zero base raised to the power of zero equals one, a standard rule of exponents.
